STATE
Four states are known.
State 1
Signed with a butterfly at lower left.
The reflections of the sails reach barely halfway to the lower edge of the plate.
Published in 1879, with the stamp of the Printseller's Association on some impressions (i.e. ).
State 2
The outlines of the jib on the boat at left are strengthened and shading added near the fore edge; diagonal shading is added on the right side of the mainsail on the second boat from left, and its reflection is extended.
State 3
The roof, chimneys and coping are added to the tall house at far left; the reflections are again extended.
State 4
The second house from the left is shaded with delicate horizontal drypoint lines.
In many impressions the drypoint shading on the sails and reflections is richly inked and looks darker than in the impression reproduced (i.e. ).
In some impressions the line of clouds has worn down and nearly disappeared; Kennedy was wrong in recording this as a different state. 3
3: Kennedy 1910[more] (cat. no. 181 III).
