The copper plate has the oval maker's stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is close in size to several other Hughes & Kimber plates of the 1870s including Florence Leyland 136, Sleeping Girl 127, Nude Reclining 126 and The Desk 129.
It is not known if it was sold at the time of Whistler's bankruptcy and later retrieved by the artist or somehow kept out of the sale; however it is known that it was printed by him in 1887. The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the lower left corner.
