The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES AND KIMBER / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is the same size and make as A Lady at a Window 148 and The Beach, Hastings 150.
It was probably among those cancelled at the time of Whistler's bankruptcy in 1879. It was cancelled with burnishing across the head, and crossed diagonal lines across the figure. The cancelled copper plate was probably among plates bought at Whistler's bankruptcy sale by the Fine Art Society, London. It was considered for publication in the set of Cancelled Plates by the Fine Art Society in 1879, but not included in the final album.
The copper plate was probably among those acquired from Robert Dunthorne (b. ca 1851), by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), 'in exchange for a number of lithographic proofs'. 9 The plate was given by Miss Philip to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
9: Note by R. Birnie Philip, inserted in the album, Hunterian Art Gallery.
