PRINTING

Impressions are printed in black ink on a variety of a papers, several being on cream Japanese paper (i.e. ), one on ivory laid paper from an old ledger with the watermark of a hunting horn in a shield (), and another on cream laid paper with an old inscription, possibly in Dutch, in pen on the verso ().
Whistler appears to have numbered the impressions of this rare drypoint in pencil, probably as he printed them, as follows:
'2' ();
'4' ();
'5 - ' ();
'c', which may be a '6' ();
'7th' and '7' (); and
'8' ().
Thus there must have been at least eight impressions, and possibly more.
