STATE

Four states are known.

State 1

Etching: K0730103
Signed and dated 'Whistler. 1861.' at lower right, above the stern of the nearest barge.
The composition is complete.

State 2

Etching: K0730101
A long left-right diagonal line (/) extends from the barge at lower right through the vise mark, to the plate edge; reflections are added below the boat with the standing oarsman, and longer, curving horizontals below this boat, extending from the lower left edge to the barge in the right foreground.

State 3

Etching: K0730202
The bow of the two-masted ship to right of centre is shaded in drypoint; reflections are added and extended below the barges, rowboats and sailing ships; more drypoint lines are added in the sky at upper left and water at left.

State 4

Etching: K0730304
Stays are added in drypoint to the masts of the two-masted ship to right of centre; some of the drypoint lines in the reflections are fading, and some are restored and extended, particularly under the tall ship at left.
