Whistler dated Eagle Wharf '1859' on the copper plate.
The artist worked and lived by the Thames from the beginning of August to early October 1859. 1 He made over thirty etchings during the year, including many scenes on and by the river Thames in London, such as Thames Warehouses 046, Old Westminster Bridge 047, Limehouse 048, The Pool 049, Eagle Wharf 050, Thames Police 053, W. Jones, Lime-Burner, Thames Street 055 and Billingsgate 051.
