STATE
Three states are known before cancellation.
State 1

Signed 'Whistler.' at lower left.
The composition is complete. The big tree at right has an irregular patch of diagonal shading just above the centre of the plate.
State 2

There is additional work on the trees in the foreground, particularly the lighter patches on the two big trees, which have new vertical shading and cross-hatching.
State 3

There is additional work all over the plate, particularly on the trees and bushes, and on the shadows on the grass; clouds are added in the sky; two thin wavering lines cross the plate from upper left to right.
