STATE
Three states are known.
State 1
Signed 'Whistler.-' at lower left.
At right there are faint suggestions of the girl's leg. There are traces of an earlier etching, possibly a head, upside down at lower left.
On later impressions of this state there are a few scratches around the figure, some running down through the dress, and one curved scratch extends to below the skirt. An impression with these scratches is reproduced below.
State 2
Inscribed ' "Annie -" ' in drypoint in the centre of the lower edge.
Horizontal and narrow zigzag drypoint lines are added at left and below the skirt; the scratches at right are reduced.
State 3
Long curving nearly vertical lines are added in drypoint to the shading at left, extending below the signature.
In later impressions the drypoint shading has faded and the plate shows extensive signs of corrosion. A late impression is reproduced below.
