The Dog on the Kennel was drawn during Whistler's etching tour of the Rhineland between 14 August and 7 October 1858.
Frederick Wedmore (1844-1921) noted: 'While Whistler was etching the preceding plate ...' (meaning The Unsafe Tenement 018) 'the dog, says Mr Avery, jumped up on to the kennel, and Whistler stopped his work on the larger plate to make this one.' 1
