KEYWORD
arch, building, people, tree.
TITLE
Neither Whistler's title nor any early title have been recorded. A descriptive title has therefore been given:
Arched doorway with figures and a tree (2009, Whistler Etching Project).
Arched doorway with figures and a tree (2009, Whistler Etching Project).
DESCRIPTION
At left is the wall of a building, with a small window at upper left; to right of this a figure stands in an archway. To right of the arch stands a small bare tree. Further right is another figure, probably a woman. The image is faint and incomplete.
SITE
This was probably drawn in Ajaccio, capital of Corsica, although it is possible it could represent Paris or London.
DISCUSSION
An earlier etching,The Young Tree 285, a Corsican drawing, The Tall Tree m1687, and a watercolour, Green and Brown - Ajaccio m1688, show similar subjects.
