STATE
Thirteen states are known before cancellation.
State 1
There is no signature or inscription.
The loaded barge in the middle of the river has no stern at left.
State 2
The stern of the loaded barge at left, in midstream, is defined by a slanting line; diagonal lines or scratches extend upwards above the second chimney from the left; there is a scratch or 'slipped stroke' running diagonally across the sky over the bridge at right.
In some impressions of this state the scratch at left has been removed or worn down, as reproduced below:
State 3
The scratch in the sky over the bridge is removed.
In some impressions, a long, slightly curved, vertical scratch runs through the bridge and over the water at right as in the impression reproduced below:
However the line was quickly removed or wore down.
State 4
There is a man on the stern of the barge at left and additional shading on the barge, its load and reflections; the mast on the sailing barge to right is extended, and it has a pennant and a topsail; a few horizontal lines are added in the sky to left of the mast; the warehouse seen behind the rigging has been partly rubbed down; a prominent scratch runs through the clouds in the upper right quadrant
State 5
A diagonal pole and rigging are added below the pennant, and another sail extends to right behind the mainsail on the barge; the sails are more fully shaded, and the rigging reinforced; new short diagonal lines are added along the shore at right; horizontal lines are added on the long curved warehouse roof on the shore above the barge; the shading under the sailing barge is reduced.
State 6
Signed with a butterfly at lower right.
Shading and cross-hatching is added on the factory behind the sailing barge; the sails of the boat are enlarged and the mast and booms are extended; reflections are added below the sailing barge and the bridge; the contour of the barge is changed; there is a sailboat, or barge, near the bridge.
The impression reproduced has foxing spots and pulp fragments in the paper.
State 7
The reflections of the factories, the barges, shore and bridge are extended; the third building from the left, which was partly burnished out, is redrawn; the buildings to right, as far as the sailboat, have new touches; the mainsail and topsail are more full shaded.
State 8
The reflections of the barge, factories and barges are extended; long nearly horizontal lines are added between the barges and the far riverbank at left.
State 9
The butterfly has been rubbed down and replaced with a new butterfly.
The outline of the barge has been redrawn, and the figure now faces right, while another figure sits on the load facing left, which has been redrawn and shaded with a few slanting lines, and in addition the hull is shaded with short vertical lines; the sailing barge has been completely redrawn, and is much larger, with a pennant flying to right instead of left; the sailing barge's reflections are redrawn in vertical and horizontal shading; the warehouses at left have been redrawn with additional shading, while the warehouses behind the barge have been partly rubbed down and redrawn; the chimneys at left are more fully shaded; slanting lines are added in the sky at right; a small sailing boat or lighter is added in front of the bridge and an even smaller one at right; most of the reflections have been rubbed down and redrawn, and the rowing boat that was originally in the foreground has been removed.
State 10
The sails are more fully shaded; the reflections are extended; the shading on the warehouses to left of the barges is augmented with fine shading; the side of the hold and hull on the barge at left are shaded.
State 11
The lines across the lower edge of the plate are extended to left; the reflections of the sail are crossed with horizontal lines; short diagonal lines augment the shadows on the barge; a rope runs from near the top of the sail to the stern of the sailing barge; two storeys are indicated on the warehouse behind the sail to right; the reflections of the bridge are extended.
State 12
The sails are more fully shaded and cross-hatched, and the barge's reflections are extended and cross-hatched.
