The copper plate has the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.'
It is similar in size and stamp to several earlier plates, particularly those for The Doorway [193] and The Two Doorways [221], which date from 1880, but not to later plates.
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). It was cleaned and cancelled with a diagonal line across the lower left corner at her request in 1931 by Nathaniel Sparks (1880-1956), who commented 'aparently unfinished - Etched plate - Not printed - plate cleaned & varnished - I cant make much out of the plate I have never seen a proof - '. 4 Miss Philip gave the plate to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
