TECHNIQUE
This is an etching, although there is a possibility that four or five left to right diagonal lines (\\\) at the centre of the open doorway may be drypoint.
PRINTING
Only a few impressions of Court of the Monastery of St Augustine, Bourges were printed, all in dark brown ink. One fine impression, as sharp and vivid as a pen drawing, was annotated '1st proof -' by Whistler; it was printed on ivory laid paper (
). Another good impression, also on ivory laid paper, appears to be on a sheet taken from a book (
). A third, a beautiful and restrained impression, was printed on thin cream laid paper (
). They are trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with Whistler's butterfly and 'imp.' to show that he printed them.
