TECHNIQUE

This is pure etching, drawn with jagged and hooked broken lines, and shaded with irregular patches of slightly curved and straight shading and cross-hatching, including some zigzag shading. There are scattered dots across the plate, possibly from foul biting or plate corrosion. The outlines of the children's heads have been re-drawn, and the child's head at right was drawn over the original outline of the door.

PRINTING

Two impressions of Children, Amboise have been recorded but only one has been located. This was printed in black ink with very little tone on ivory laid paper removed from a book (Graphic with a link to impression #K3810102). It was trimmed to the platemark and signed on a tab with Whistler's butterfly and 'imp.' to show that he had printed it.
