TECHNIQUE

The Wine Shop, Amboise is mostly etching, augmented with drypoint. The figures in the foreground are very lightly drawn in, and not finished. The rest of the scene was drawn with long repeated and broken outlines backed up by irregular patches of shading. A little crosshatching enhances the deepest shadows.

PRINTING

Only one impression is known, inscribed '1st Proof pulled', and it was printed in dark brown ink on cream laid paper, with pale tone at the left and heavier tone at the bottom, showing distinct curving horizontal wiping marks (Graphic with a link to impression #K3700103). It is trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with Whistler's butterfly and 'imp.' to show that he printed it.
