EXHIBITIONS

It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime. The first known exhibition was at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904, to which it was almost certainly lent by Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) (Graphic with a link to impression #K3700103). 7

SALES & COLLECTORS

The '1st Proof' was sold by Whistler to the New York print dealers, H. Wunderlich & Co., for £8.8.0 on 6 April 1891. 8 This was the sole known impression, and was acquired by Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) (Graphic with a link to impression #K3700103) and then, through A. A. Hahlo & Co., New York, by Harris G. Whittemore (d. ca 1937); it was later bought by the Library of Congress.
