The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is the same size as other 1887 plates including Wimpole Street [279], The Baby, Gray's Inn [288], The Little Hat [366] and one of 1888, Windows opposite Hotel, Bourges [397].
The plate of Children's Fruit Barrow was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. The plate was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line from to right of the upper left corner, to slightly to left of the centre of the lower edge.
