SALES & COLLECTORS

Whistler sold it usually for £8.8.0. The first sale was on 17 November 1887 to the London print dealer, Thomas M. McLean (b. ca 1832); then he sold one on 3 May 1888 through H. Wunderlich & Co., New York, to Ross Revillon Winans (1850-1912). 12 He also sold impressions to H. Wunderlich & Co. in 1897, 1899 and 1900. 13

Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) bought an impression from Dr James M. Hart on 1 October 1896 (Graphic with a link to impression #K3520103). Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) owned an impression by 1900 (Graphic with a link to impression #K3520102). Freer's one was bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art, and Lathrop's went to the Art Institute of Chicago. An impression with Whistler's signature and inscription '1st proof' was acquired by Harris G. Whittemore (d. ca 1937) and was later bought by the Library of Congress (Graphic with a link to impression #K3520105). Another impression of the first state, inscribed by Whistler 'Fishing Quai Ostende / 1st State' was bought by the Hamburger Kunsthalle (Graphic with a link to impression #K3520106).
