The plate for The Little Nurse, Grays Inn was executed in pure etching.
PRINTING
There is one impression in black ink on ivory laid paper (
) but most are in dark brown ink on laid paper. One, signed and inscribed with the title by Whistler, is on ivory paper (
); another, also on ivory paper, is marked with a tiny reversed 'c' on the verso, possibly a mark of approval or selection by Whistler (
); another is on buff 'antique' (pre-1800) paper (
), a fourth on ivory paper with a partial Hunting Horn or Strasbourg Lily watermark (
); and a fifth on cream paper with a partial D & W BLAUW watermark (
). They were trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with a butterfly and 'imp.' to show that Whistler had printed them.
