The copper plate bears a partial oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is close in size to several earlier plates - all dating from 1887 - including Savoy Scaffolding [317], Tilbury [312], Dipping the Flag [308] and Salvation Army, Sandwich [319].
It was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to his sister-in-law Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who, in 1931, asked Nathaniel Sparks (1880-1956) to print a few proofs. 7 It was then cancelled with a diagonal line at right. Miss Birnie Philip gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
