Nut Shop, St James’s Place, Houndsditch probably dates from the nut season - the autumn or winter of 1887. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date. The copper plate is similar in size to several 1887 etchings (i.e.Troopships [307] and The Barrow - Quartier des Marolles, Brussels [346]).
However, it could date from early 1888, and was first recorded as sold in June 1888.

1 In the same area and about the same date, Whistler etched St James's Place, Houndsditch [255].

1: Whistler to Wunderlich's, 29 June 1888, GUW #13052.
