PRINTING
Rag Shop, St Martin's Lane is very rare. Impressions were printed in black ink; the first proof was printed on ivory laid paper, selectively wiped - the image is fairly clean, but there is darker tone around it, particularly at the left and right edges (
). Another, annotated in an unknown hand 'First Impr.' is likewise in black on ivory laid paper (
). All are trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with a butterfly and 'imp.' to show that they had been printed by Whistler.
