The first proof of The Barber's Shop, Chelsea was printed in dark brown ink on 'antique' (pre-1800) laid paper, with light, even tone (Graphic with a link to impression #K2710107). Most are in dark brown ink, several on ivory laid (Graphic with a link to impression #K2710103, Graphic with a link to impression #K2710108, Graphic with a link to impression #K2710111) and ivory 'antique' laid (Graphic with a link to impression #K2710107, Graphic with a link to impression #K2710113); off-white light-weight laid with 'GR' watermark (Graphic with a link to impression #K2710109); and in brown ink on ivory laid paper with a dyed red edge at right, removed from a book (Graphic with a link to impression #K2710104). Other impressions are in black ink on cream laid paper with a Seven Provinces watermark (Graphic with a link to impression #K2710102) and warm black ink on cream laid with 'IV' water- or countermark (Graphic with a link to impression #K2710105). All are trimmed to the platemark and signed with Whistler's butterfly and 'imp.' to show that he had printed them.
