STATE

Three states are known before cancellation.

State 1

Not reproduced (Graphic with a link to impression #K2160z03). 5 There is no signature or inscription.

5: A digital image will be added shortly.

There is a prominent '<' shaped mark in the upper left corner.

State 2

Impression: K2160202
A prominent '<' shaped mark in the upper left corner is removed; new fine drypoint shading is added throughout, most notably along the horizon line, on the clump of trees at far right, on the hulls and reflections of the small sail boats, on the water below the large sailing ship, on the gondolier, gondola and its reflection, on the mooring posts at right, and on the railing and figures at lower left.
The new drypoint shading became worn during printing, so the clarity of those lines varies widely among impressions of this state. The impression illustrated has several areas of pale damp-stain and a few fox-marks.
Published in this and the following state by Messrs Dowdeswell and Thibaudeau with the Twenty-six Etchings (the 'Second Venice Set') in 1886.

State 3

Impression: K2160z05
Signed, very faintly, with a butterfly in drypoint at lower left.
Fine lines and shading throughout the image have worn away, and the butterfly signature is very difficult to see without magnification.

State 3 (cancelled)

Impression: K2160402
Cancelled with crossed diagonal and zig zag lines.
