The copper plate has no maker's mark. It is a different size from any other plate (the closest is The Piazzetta [218], which is 2mm bigger). It was made for Whistler in Venice, and shows on the verso the 'pebbled' texture produced by the craftsman's hammer. This was used during the winter of 1879-1880, or at latest by April. 6
6: Getscher 1970.
The plate was published by Messrs Dowdeswell and Thibaudeau with A Set of Twenty-six Etchings (the 'Second Venice Set') in 1886. It was cancelled in 1887 with irregular, widely spaced crossed diagonal lines.
The plate is now in the Art Institute of Chicago. 7
