The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It must have been taken from London to Venice specifically for the Fine Art Society set of etchings, but then used for the 'Second Venice Set' instead. It was similar in size to several other Venetian etchings including The Riva [229],
The Bridge, Santa Marta [201],
The Balcony [202] and
The Rialto [199].
It was published by Messrs Dowdeswell and Thibaudeau with A Set of Twenty-six Etchings (the 'Second Venice Set') in 1886. It was cancelled with rough, widely spaced crossed diagonal lines.
The plate is now in the Art Institute of Chicago. 9
