The Traghetto, No. 2 dates from 1880. The composition was based on an earlier version of the same composition, Traghetto [231].
Whistler arrived in Venice in September 1879. He was active in Venice from October 1879 to October 1880 and was back in London in November 1880.
This etching was published in Venice, a Series of Twelve Etchings (the 'First Venice Set') by the Fine Art Society, London, in 1880. However, printing continued until at least 1889.
