STATE
Six states are known before cancellation.
State 1
There is no signature or inscription.
The composition is complete
Except for Henry Irving's feet.
Except for Henry Irving's feet.
The impression reproduced above was thought by Kennedy to be the first state; it was extensively touched with ink, which makes it very difficult to distinguish the etched and drypoint lines. The original impression has not been located. 11
11: Kennedy 1910 (cat. no. 171).
State 2
The shadow behind and to left of Irving's left ankle has been partially deleted; several slanting lines are added to left of his thigh and between his legs, on his left arm and under it, on the cloak at right.
State 3
Diagonal shading is added in the background at the left, over and extending the previous shadow and reaching to the ankle; several new slanting drypoint lines extend the shading behind his left foot.
The impression reproduced has only been partly inked.
State 4
Additional diagonal lines are added to the shadows at left.
The impression reproduced has only been partly inked, and the bottom half of the legs is barely visible.
State 5
Additional diagonal lines extend the shadows at left, and vertical shading extends the shadows under the cloak at right.
The impression reproduced has only been partly inked, and has not been located; the reproduction is not very clear so that it is hard to make out finer details.
State 6
Not reproduced.
Numerous fine drypoint lines augment the shading in the background and are added on the figure, notably on the legs.
This state is only known from impressions of the cancelled plate.
