STATE
Three states are known before cancellation.
State 1
Signed with a faint butterfly at centre left, near the left edge. Inscribed 'Hastings - ' at lower right.
The composition is complete.
State 2
The butterfly signature is replaced by a larger butterfly.
Faint horizontal drypoint lines are added below the butterfly; drypoint lines are added in the sky, at left.
State 3
Several drypoint lines are added above and to right of the clouds.
In later impressions of this state the drypoint lines in the sky and below the butterfly are wearing down, as in the impression reproduced below.
State 4
The butterfly signature is again replaced by a new butterfly, one without veins on the wings or shading behind the wings.
The drypoint lines in the sky and below the butterfly are almost entirely worn away.
