TECHNIQUE
There are very heavy drypoint lines on the hat, the outline of the coat and skirt and on some of the folds of drapery. Only one impression of this drypoint is known (). It is extensively worked over in crayon, suggesting different outlines on the dress and arms at right, and adding shading all round the figure, and a signature at right. There is also white gouache on the hat, the outline of the face and lips, the ruffle at the figure's neck, over the shading on her bodice, on her left and right hands and on the front edge of her coat. It was unusual for Whistler to work on his prints in crayon; usually he worked with wash.
