STATE
Seven states are known before cancellation.
State 2
Long slanting lines are added below the roof beam near the window; there appear to be some spots of corrosion on the wall, window, and edges of the plate.
The impression reproduced is heavily inked, making it difficult to distinguish variations in line.
State 3
There are several pairs of short, slanting lines on the picture, as well as to right of the picture and on the wall below, and on the floor; several other scratches may be accidental, including one at the corner of the room, above centre; the earlier spots of corrosion have been removed; new long vertical lines extend the shading at far right.
State 4
New long vertical and slightly curved lines are added to right of the figure.
The impression reproduced is a 'slipped' impression, with some duplication of lines at left.
Impressions vary considerably depending on the amount of inking and retroussage, as well as the wearing down of drypoint lines.
State 5
The man's coat is redrawn and bulges out below his knee at left; long vertical and slanting lines are added on the wall, ceiling and floor, including additional shading under the bench in the centre, on the coat hanging up to right of the window, underneath the figure and extending the shadow behind the figure; shorter lines darken the shading of the jug.
