The copper plate is the same size as The Steps, Amsterdam [452] and Bridge, Amsterdam [447], which date from 1889, and close in size to two earlier etchings, The Barber's Shop, Chelsea [263] and Justice Walk, Chelsea [441] of 1887.
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). Miss Philip gave the plate to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the lower left corner.
