The copper plate bears the maker's stamp, 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' This was Whistler's main supplier and the size was one he favoured about 1888. The same stamp appears on several copper plates that are close in size, including Mrs J. Birnie Philip [479], Stéphane Mallarmé [462], Market Women: Turkeys [424], Theatre, Loches [418] and Hôtel de la Promenade, Loches [415].
The copper plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). Miss Philip gave the plate to the University of Glasgow in 1935. The plate was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line from above centre left to below centre right.
