Gates, City, London dates from 1887. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date.
The copper plate is very close in size to several other plates such as Booth at a Fair [257] and The Little Nurse, Grays Inn [286], including some that definitely date from 1887, such as Return to Tilbury [311].
It is one of a series of etchings made in and around Grey's Inn at this date, including Doorway, Gray's Inn [289] and The Steps, Gray's Inn [282].
