Sketch of Houses probably dates from between late August and October 1858, when Whistler made a sketching and etching tour through Alsace and the Rhineland into Germany.
It is the same size as two other etchings of this period, and is close in style to one of these, namely The Unsafe Tenement [18]. Kennedy grouped it with etchings of the late 1870s but there is no reason for such a late date. 1
