Hole in the Hill, Amboise dates from 1888. The etching was first listed among 'French Plates' in Whistler's studio in 1888. 1

Beatrice and James Whistler visited Amboise in the Loire valley during their honeymoon in late September/October 1888. Other etchings of the area include Château d'Amboise [431] and The Clock Tower - Amboise [429]. Whistler wrote to a friend:

1: J. Whistler, list, [August 1887/1888], GUW #13233.

'I have brought away something lovely from Amboise - and on my return to London will send you one of the first proofs to hang up in your diplomatic breakfast room that you may prove your intimate connection with "Elementor Kunst"' (that is, 'Fundamental Art'). 2

2: Whistler to J. Rennell Rodd, [25/30 September 1888?], GUW #05348.
