A French Street dates from the autumn of 1888.
The form of the butterfly signature, with the butterfly placed on a shaded trefoil, shows that it was etched shortly after the marriage of James and Beatrice Whistler (1857-1896).
It was probably made during their honeymoon, between September and October 1888. It is the same or very close in size to a number of copper plates of similar subjects that date from that trip, such as Courtyard, Rue P. L. Courier, Tours [391] and Gateway, Chartreuse, near Loches [421].
