The Hoop (Gray's Inn) dates from 1887. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date. During the summer Whistler worked on several etchings in Gray's Inn gardens including The Baby, Gray's Inn [288] and The Young Tree [285]. By December 1887 'The Hoop (Gray’s Inn)' was printed and on sale. 1
