Shipping, Venice dates from 1880. Whistler was active in Venice from late September 1879 to October 1880. A proof of this etching was acquired by Otto Henry Bacher (1856-1909) when he worked in Venice in the summer and autumn of 1880, and the etching probably dates from that time.
