Whistler with the white lock dates from between 1876 and 1879; stylistically, a date early in this period is indicated.

It may have been the drypoint 'Head' sold by Whistler in 1877. 1

Frederick Wedmore (1844-1921) dated this drypoint 1879, which is too late, although it was published in set of cancelled plates by the Fine Art Society in 1879. 2

1: Whistler to C. A. Howell, [6-25 November 1877], GUW #02178.

2: Wedmore 1886 A (cat. no. 142).

Other portraits of this period include Irving as Philip of Spain, No. 2 [159], Sir Garnet Wolseley [177], The Boy (Charlie Hanson) [145], and Agnes [146].
