The Boy (Charlie Hanson) dates from either 1875 or 1876.
It is dated from the technique and from the age of the sitter, Charles James Whistler Hanson (1870-1935), who appears to be about five or six years old. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date.
Portraits of this period include Sketches of Heads [138], The Silk Dress [151], Girl Standing [152], Girl Lying Down [128], Agnes [146], The Piano [144], Irving as Philip of Spain, No. 1 [158], Whistler with the White Lock [162], and Maud, Standing [169].
