Agnes dates from between 1875 and 1878. It may date from the same time as The Scotch Widow [147] and The Boy (Charlie Hanson) [145]. At that date the sitter, Bridget Agnes Hiffernan (1844/1845-after 1919), and her sister, Joanna Hiffernan (b. ca 1843), appear to have been in close touch with Whistler and concerned in the upbringing of Charles James Whistler Hanson (1870-1935), who is The Boy.
