Cameo, No. 1 (Mother and Child) dates from 1891. It is first recorded as sold on 6 June 1891 to Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), when William Bell (fl. 1886-1892) wrote to Freer: 'I am directed by Mr Whistler to send off to you the enclosed proof of his first new etching
