No exhibition is known in Whistler's life time. Two impressions were shown after Whistler's death at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904, one of which was lent by Freer (). It was also shown in the Whistler Memorial Exhibition in London in 1905. 5

Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) bought an impression from the print dealers H. Wunderlich & Co. in 1900 (). Five impressions were kept by Whistler, bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) and given by her to the University of Glasgow (, , , , ).
