Sketches including a head and a hat probably date from 1888/1889. The neat butterfly signature appears to date from after Whistler's marriage to Beatrice Whistler (1857-1896) in August 1888. The plate is close in size and subject to another copper plate of a roughly similar date, Black Eagle [439].
