TITLE
Various versions of the sitter's name were recorded by Whistler and his cataloguers, as follows:
'Arthur Haden' (1861, V&A). 1
'Arthur Haden' (1870s, Whistler). 2
'Portrait of Arthur Seymour' (1874, James Anderson Rose (1819-1890)). 3
'Arthur Seymour Haden' (1881, Union League Club). 4
'Arthur Seymour' (1886, Frederick Wedmore (1844-1921)). 5
'Arthur Haden' (1909, Howard Mansfield (1849-1938)). 6
Whistler's original title, 'Arthur Haden' is sufficient to identify the portrait, and differentiate it from an earlier portrait of the same sitter, Little Arthur [8].

DESCRIPTION
A young boy is sitting on a round-backed wooden chair in front of a curtain. His body is turned slightly to the right but he is looking at the viewer. In the second state the figure is completed: his left hand holds the curved frame of the chair at right, and his right hand is holding his left foot, which is crossed upon his right knee. He has short hair, and wears a black velvet jacket and trousers with wide stripes. He is wearing light-weight shoes with a narrow strap across the ankle. A straw hat with round up-turned brim and a ribbon is on the ground to his right.
SITTER
Arthur Charles Haden (1852-1910), son of Deborah Delano Haden (1825-1908) and Francis Seymour Haden, Sr (1818-1910). At this time he was seven years old. He had also posed for Little Arthur [8].
