PRINTING

Impressions are printed in black ink on a variety of a papers, several being on cream Japanese paper (i.e. Graphic with a link to impression #K0990102), one on ivory laid paper from an old ledger with the watermark of a hunting horn in a shield (Graphic with a link to impression #K0990103), and another on cream laid paper with an old inscription, possibly in Dutch, in pen on the verso (Graphic with a link to impression #K0990104).
Whistler appears to have numbered the impressions of this rare drypoint in pencil, probably as he printed them, as follows:
'2' (Graphic with a link to impression #K0990107);
'4' (Graphic with a link to impression #K0990103);
'5 - ' (Graphic with a link to impression #K0990105);
'c', which may be a '6' (Graphic with a link to impression #K0990101);
'7th' and '7' (Graphic with a link to impression #K0990102); and
'8' (Graphic with a link to impression #K0990108).
Thus there must have been at least eight impressions, and possibly more.
