EXHIBITIONS

No exhibitions were recorded in Whistler's lifetime. It was, however, shown after his death, in the major Whistler Memorial Exhibitions in New York (at the Grolier Club) in 1904, lent by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) (Graphic with a link to impression #K4420103); and in London and Paris in 1905. 10

10: New York 1904a (cat. no. 396); Paris Mem. 1905 (cat. no. 431); London Mem. 1905 (cat. no. 360).

SALES & COLLECTORS

In 1903, shortly before Whistler's death, the London print-dealer Robert Dunthorne (b. ca 1851) bought this etching - under the title, 'The Hole in the Wall Ajaccio -' from Whistler for a surprisingly high price, £12.12.0. 11

11: [17 June 1903], GUW #13042.

Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) noted that in 1909 there were impressions in the collections of John Caldwell (fl. 1887-1907), Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) (Graphic with a link to impression #K4420103) and Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) (Graphic with a link to impression #K4420102). One impression was acquired by Harris G. Whittemore (d. ca 1937) (Graphic with a link to impression #K4420106). Only two other impressions are known, both of which remained in Whistler's estate; one was given (Graphic with a link to impression #K4420204) and one bequeathed (Graphic with a link to impression #K4420105) by his executrix Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) to the University of Glasgow.
