The copper plate has no maker's mark. There is no other plate of this size; it is the same height as Chancellerie, Loches [411], but that is 30mm wider.
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death. It was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the Hunterian Art Gallery, University of Glasgow, in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the lower left corner.
