Bunting dates from 23 July 1887.
Jubilee celebrations marked the fiftieth year of the reign of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) in 1887. A Naval Review was held at Spithead on 23 July. The Times gave a full account of the Naval Review. 1
Whistler as President of the Society of British Artists was invited to attend. During the day he made twelve etchings, the 'Jubilee Set', as well as watercolours, such as Silver and Blue: Southampton [m1142], and pencil sketches. 2 A related etching is Dipping the Flag [308].
